Here's a more helpful story taking a look behind the headlines of myriad stories that extol the health benefits of tequila:
"We’ll need much more research before tequila or anything in it can be recommended for bone health, or any other health concern. Until then, I hope medical writers — and readers — will be careful in how they interpret preliminary research. It’s one thing to hope that what you like is also good for you. It’s quite another for that to be any more than wishful thinking."

Why Seniors Should Have A Drink: Benefits Of Alcohol
“Why Seniors Should Have A Drink: Benefits Of Alcohol.” 🙄It was originally posted on the @silversneakersfitness site on 2.29.16 — a fitness program for seniors. Problem drinking among older Americans is actually on the rise. Results from a JAMA study published last year (source: NPR): “And among older adults, abuse and dependence more than doubled. The researchers didn't theorize as to why older adults are drinking more than they used to. But they noted that the increase in high-risk and problem drinking among older adults is ‘unprecedented.’And it's worrying, because older adults at are a high risk of death, injury or disease connected to alcohol use — from falls, for instance, or from adverse interactions between drugs and drinking.” Perhaps your mom or Grandma drinks in moderation. Many cannot. When you see stories extolling the health benefits of alcohol, read very carefully and check your sources.
Greatist: Don't Get Drunk Too Early
@Greatest we really appreciate your mission of providing science-backed, accessible health content. We agree with you that there’s not one way to be healthy. However, we would respectfully ask that you not share and post content like this. While it’s intended to be funny, and humor is subjective, it’s problematic content considering the huge issue we are facing regarding alcohol and women in the US. Also, considering the story that appeared last week that says the risks of alcohol outweigh the health benefits, now would be a good time to review your editorial and social media policies. You have a great chance to take a stand and be a voice, and to better inform your readers. (Perhaps you’ve done content that speaks to the breadth and impact of alcohol use and shows readers there’s another way — is love to see it if you have.) [As always: we aren’t prohibitionists; everyone has the right to choose to drink or not drink — it’s about the messages we tell each other, particularly in #media and #marketing.
